Tips To Deal With Interview Rejection

Tips To Deal With Interview Rejection

There will be times during your career when you aren’t accepted for the position that you really wanted. No-one likes to receive those interview rejection phone calls, emails or letters, and we hope it never happens. But, it can.

As you progress through your career you can find your own methods on how to deal with interview rejection. Some people have a natural resilience to it, but it can be difficult to know what to do and how to handle it. To help you with this, we’ve put together some steps/tips that you can use:

Take a breath, step back and relax

It’s easy to take interview rejection to heart, blaming yourself and thinking the worst. Sometimes you know when things could have gone smoother, but for those times you think you nailed it and didn’t get the job, it can be demoralising.

Remember that there may be external factors that are out of your control, such as an internal applicate who understands the company better got the role. So, it is important that you take a moment to clear your mind before moving onto the next step.

Get Feedback

Always try and get feedback from the interviewer. Although you won’t be given every external factor, you will be told about your own performance and the (basic) reason why you have been rejected. Any negatives should be taken on board to help prepare you for future interviews. Don’t forget to ask questions like: What do you think I could have done to improve?

Be Positive

It’s important that you learn from this experience and start searching and applying for new opportunities with a positive perspective. Take the time to rewrite your CV to match the requirements of the job specification. Or do some role-plays with a peer or family member, if there was a question that stumped you during the interview. Now is the time to get prepared and get searching!

We hope you don’t have to use these tips, but if you do hopefully they will be beneficial! Now it’s time to find your next interview
